Retirement communities are active adult communities where a variety of housings are available for seniors and retirees. It covers an array of activities suitable and beneficial to retirees and seniors. Such housings are specially designed for those people who have retired, and are on or above a specific age limit. The facilities and services of retirement communities include the following:
- Boating
- Arts and crafts
- On-site medical facilities
- Trails
- Golf courses
- Clubhouses
- Active adult retail
- Swimming pools
Retirement communities are very common in places with warm climates. The 5 states in the US which have Certified Retirement Community programs are West Virginia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. Other regions which have such communities include Georgia, Florida, Idaho, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, and Hawaii.
Retirement communities are also termed as age-restricted community because the residents of these communities much be aged 55 or older. In the United States, there are three kinds of retirement communities –
- Active Communities
- Supportive Communities
- Active/Supportive Communities
Retirement communities can also be “sorted” by religious faith, such as Covenant retirement communities, Presbyterian retirement communities, Methodist retirement communities and Catholic retirement communities to name a few.

The community organizers keep the medical history of all the residents in case of emergency. The residents are more or less of the same age and hence, there is a special bond and fruitful interaction among them.
